Haverhill Historical Society’s Summer Speaker Series

Haverhill, NH – The Haverhill Historical Society is pleased to present Tim Lewis and “A History of the Cog Railway” on Tuesday June 18 at 7:00 PM at Alumni Hall, 75 Court St. in Haverhill Corner. Admission is free and open to the public. The venue is handicapped accessible.

Mr. Lewis spent his first 14 summers “growing up at the cog”. With his dad “Jitney”, in 1962 they began a project looking into the history of the Mount Washington Cog Railway with particular emphasis on those who worked on the railroad, at the Base Station and the Summit House from 1866 forward.

This effort is now part of a year-long research project backed by Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, where Tim Lewis has been teaching electronic journalism since 1999. His on-line 407 page “Aggregated Timeline” of Cog Railway history is a fascinating resource into the history of the tourism industry in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
