Joan Ruth Thompson, 85, of Littleton, N.H., died peacefully Sept. 24, 2018, at Littleton Regional Healthcare following a period of declining health. It was late afternoon on a beautiful autumn day, with the sun beginning to set and the harvest moon on the rise, and while being held tenderly in her daughter’s arms, her son holding her hand, and dear family friend, Kendra, at her side, she took her last breath. For the past two months, she was able to be at home and she was cared for by her son and daughter.

John Eugene Emerson born March 2, 1932 to Charles and Luvia Emerson of Topsham, Vt. the youngest of nine and proud to be called the “spoiled little brat” that his older sisters made him into, and has continued this tradition to this last day of Oct. 9, 2018 which only one remaining sibling, Irene Darling, of South Ryegate, can deny or confirm this rumor. Johnny admits that he has lived longer than anyone ever expected him to and has only passed on today because his body has come to an end. Johnny once claimed, after multiple operations, after multiple years, losing multiple parts of his body: “I’m a stubborn S.O.B. and I’m gonna make God take me one piece at a time” and indeed he did. His Emerson tough spirit and heart is always with us.

Gail R. O’Day of Winston-Salem, NC, died on Sept. 22, 2018, surrounded by the love and prayers of family and friends near and far. At the time of her death, she had been contending with the challenge of a glioblastoma brain tumor for nearly four years from the appearance of her first (unrecognized) symptoms. An avid hiker, she compared her challenge to the most treacherous trail she ever hiked in her beloved White Mountains of New Hampshire, and she met it with characteristic realism, fearlessness, strength, and resilience.
