DeFOSSE: William Joseph, 87, of Bishop Road, Lisbon, N.H., died Tuesday, March 5, 2001, at the Littleton Regional Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Shelburne, N.H., June 24, 1913, a son of Alphonse and Alice (Fourtin) DeFosse. He attended North Country schools. Later he went to work as a sawyer for Varney Saw Mill of Walker Hill Road, Lisbon, working for a number of years alongside its founder, Robert Varney.

Bill married Pearl, his wife of 37 years, in 1963. He was a member of the Littleton Eagles Club, had a love for his pets, and for performing various projects around his homestead.

Surviving family includes his wife Pearl (Lemon) DeFosse of Lisbon; two sons, Gene Fitchett of Landaff, N.H., and Chuck Varney of Littleton, N.H.; one daughter, Renee Cate of Bath, N.H.; two brothers, Florein DeFosse of Lisbon, N.H., and Thomas DeFosse of Rumford, Maine; a sister, Blanch Bergeron of Berlin, N.H.; five granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 8 at 11 a.m. from the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 77 South Main St., Lisbon, with the Rev. Lyn O. McIntosh, pastor of the Lisbon Shared Ministry officiating. Interment will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery of Lisbon in the spring.

The family suggests donations be made in his memory to the Lisbon Fast Squad, North Country Home Health Agency or the Littleton Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements and care have been entrusted to Pillsbury Funeral Homes.
