DOWNING: Edgar R., 81, of Newbury, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford.

He was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Bradford, the son of Byron R. and Lillian (Carnes) Downing. He married Lillian B. Aiken in Chelsea on June 30, 1939. He attended school in Chelsea, Vt. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He returned home to Chelsea for two years before following logging operations throughout the central Vermont area. Edgar and Lillian lived in Corinth for a few years before moving to Northfield, Vt. in 1960. They lived 20 years in Northfield before moving to Newbury in 1989. Edgar had worked for Carl Downing, East Corinth Bobbin Mill, and for 21 years at Northfield Wood Products in Northfield.

He was a member of the American Legion in Bradford. He enjoyed spending time with his family, building things with wood, and growing roses in his garden.

He is survived by a son, Richard Downing of Newbury; three daughters, Arloa Whitcher of Corinth, Vt., Elaine Smith of Topsham, Vt., and Joyce Barbara of West Newbury; a sister, Maxine A. Downing of Chelsea, Vt.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife Lillian, Aug. 17, 2001; a daughter, Mary Downing; two brothers, Byron and Bernard Downing; and five sisters, Doreen Morrill, Beverly Downing, Lila Lyon, Thelma Austin and Marjorie Beckhorn.

Friends may call Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea, Vt. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David E. Smith of the United Church of Chelsea officiating. The burial will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m., in the Munn Cemetery in Corinth, Vt.
