Ruth Taylor, the executive director of Littleton Main Street, paused long enough yesterday while celebrating Littleton\'s wonderful news affirming the $2.75 million in federal funds for downtown reconstruction, to tell us about plans to go for a Great American Main Street award. Only five Main Street programs in the United States are so awarded each year, and Taylor believes Littleton has a pretty good shot at it.
\"We feel we\'ve accomplished a lot in five years,\" she said, pointing to the more-than $6 million in downtown investments. Although AHEAD\'s housing project makes up a big part of that, \"all the little signs, all the little awnings, all the little paint jobs - they all added up. It\'s a tremendous accomplishment, given the economic isolation here.\" The average weekly wage in Littleton is $454 compared to the state average of $618. \"In light of that kind of economic disparity, a $6 million reinvestment is astounding,\" Taylor said.
