North Country Career Center's SkillsUSA chapter members, along with various other career and technical centers, attended the annual Fall Leadership Conference at the State House in Montpelier, Vt. on Nov. 3.
The day began with an opening ceremony by the state officers in the House of Representative Chambers. This year's state officers are: secretary Tian Berry; treasurer Dajana Stankovic; vice president Samantha Fandino; and president Shanely Brown. All were introduced by the executive director of Vermont SkillsUSA, Jane Donahue.
Shanely Brown then announced the guest speakers -- National High School parliamentarian Antonio Vargas and also a keynote motivational speaker and comedian, Colin Ryan. The students then separated into various workshops where they heard from two other guest speakers about their non-profit organizations.
Hattie Johnson, the head of Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, informed the students about the programs at the camp and various volunteer work they can participate in to help kids and their families who have or have had cancer. The executive director of Spectrum Youth and Family Services, Mark Redmond, discussed ways to be involved and help troubled teens and young adults who are homeless. Colin Ryan gave a speech on public speaking and had the students do an activity to practice that skill.
The day concluded with the general session closing ceremony and lunch.
