Newport City Elementary School will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

Newport City staff and community volunteers will lead three walking groups that will depart from:

â?¢ Court Square on Main Street at 7:30 a.m.

â?¢ Sunset Terrace and East Main Street at 7:45 a.m.

â?¢ Spring Street and South Avenue at 7:45 a.m.

This "Walking School Bus" has several stop along the way, so community members are invited to join the students and staff from the start or at one of the stops. Families are encouraged to join this healthy morning activity!
