Five students from Lake Region Union High School in Orleans placed second at the fourth annual Vermont LifeSmarts state competition on Feb. 7 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Montpelier. The team includes team captain Devin Royer, Sarah Carpenter, Gratia Rowell, Zeb McCoy and Jade Jarvis. They are coached by Elaine French and Betsy Calhoun.
In order to qualify for the state competition, the students competed in an online competition and were among the six highest scoring teams. LifeSmarts, the Ultimate Consumer Challenge, is a free educational program that tests students in five areas: personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology and consumer rights and responsibilities. It is sponsored at the national level by the National Consumers League and by the Vermont Jump$tart Coalition at the state level.
