LTS Mathletes Earn First Place at Regional MATHCOUNTS

The Lyndon Town School MATHCOUNTS was recently interviewed at the Magic 97.7 radio station: from left, Kandi Greaves (coach), Alyssa Nichols (Grade 8), Madalyn Sanborn (Grade 7), Rory Bean (Grade 8) and Morgan Hall (Grade 8). Amy Gale, principal, is seated in the front.

Lyndon Town School's MATHCOUNTS team earned first-place status at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition held Feb. 11 at Lyndon State College. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide enrichment, club and competition program specifically for U.S. middle school math students.

MATHCOUNTS competitions include 3 components: The Sprint Round (40 minutes) consists of 30 problems. This round tests accuracy, with time being such that only the most capable students will complete all of the problems. Calculators are not permitted; The Target Round (approximately 30 minutes) consists of eight problems presented to competitors in four pairs (6 minutes per pair). This round features multiple-step problems that engage Mathletes in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving processes. Problems assume the use of calculators; The Team Round (20 minutes) consists of 10 problems that team members work together to solve. Team member interaction is permitted and encouraged. Problems assume the use of calculators; The Countdown Round is a fast-paced, oral competition for top-scoring individuals (based on scores in the Sprint and Target Rounds). In this round, pairs of Mathletes compete against each other and the clock to solve problems. Calculators are not permitted.

On the morning of Feb. 17, the LTS MATHCOUNTS first-place team was interviewed on Radio Station Magic 97.7 with Val Davis and Amy Gale, principle of LTS. The team includes Morgan Hall (Grade 8) who placed second overall in the Individual scores and earned first place in the Count Down Competition. The team competes at the State Level March 24 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.

Pictures of the team and the trophies they earned are in the display case in the main lobby of LTS.
