Academy Forestry Students Notch Wins At Vermont Technical College Competition

Five of the six St. Johnsbury Academy Forestry 2 students competing earned at least one first place finish at a May 15 Lumberjack/Lumberjill contest hosted by Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center.

Event winners included junior Levi Willey of St. Johnsbury, men's ax throw; senior Destainy Griffith from Sheffield, women's precision splitting; juniors Joseph Burrill of Monroe, N.H. and Matt Montgomery from Danville, men's log roll; and Burrill and senior Tyler Campbell from Danville, fire building.

Griffith also recorded second place finishes in the women's ax throw and bowsaw events, and Burrill and Willey paired for second in the men's pulp toss competition. Montgomery and Willey added a third place finish in fire building.

Led by instructor Samuel Nijensohn, the Forestry 2 class is part of the Academy's Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum. Additional information about Academy course offerings is available by visiting the school's website, www.stjohnsburyacademy.org.
