Charleston Elementary School Adopts Moretown Elementary School For The Holidays

Charleston Elementary School interim principal Sharon Gonyaw is shown with Charleston eighth-grade students Jacey Gray, Alyssa Davis, Brooke Austin, Dylan Simoneau and Moretown School principal, Duane Pierson.

Moretown Elementary School is one of the Vermont schools which were impacted by Tropical Storm Irene in August. Charleston Elementary School learned about Moretown when they were highlighted on the Channel 3 News.

Charleston's interim principal, Sharon Gonyaw, made an outreach call to Moretown Elementary School asking how the students and staff could assist them. School officials spoke with Gonyaw about five families who currently still remain displaced from their homes. Charleston staff and students have adopted those five families.

Charleston held two fundraisers in October. The staff and students collected coins and canned good items for these families. On Nov. 22, Gonyaw and four eighth-grade students made the trip to Moretown Elementary School to personally deliver the Thanksgiving dinners and holiday gifts for those families.

The CES students and staff hope that the dinner and holiday gifts bring some joy, comfort and support for these families whose lives have been impacted by the storm.
