NEWPORT -- United Christian Academy has entered into a partnership with Sevenstar Academy to offer Internet based classes to current students and to students who are home-schooled. Courses taken at Sevenstar Academy are fully accredited and allow the school to expand curricular options beyond what are currently offered. This year Sevenstar Academy classes are offered only to those students in Grade 9 who wish to study Spanish, and to seniors who may be taking an elective class not currently offered by UCA. Special arrangements can be made for home-schooled students to take classes with Sevenstar Academy beyond these options.
In the future UCA will be able to expand online offerings to provide AP Classes and dual enrollment classes that will allow a student to receive high school and college credit at the same time. For more information, call UCA.
Olivia Foster, Grade 11, has volunteered to direct the El-Bells handbell choir this year. Olivia was a member of the award-winning Bronze Ambassadors Handbell Choir and is looking forward to continuing the handbell tradition at UCA. El Bells will be composed of students in grade 6 and will meet on Thursdays each week.
Bottle Redemption Fundraiser: all recyclable bottle/cans that are turned into Buzzy's Redemption on East Main Street in Newport and designated for UCA will earn $.06 each which will be donated to the general fund.
The Christmas wreath fundraiser will begin Oct. 4, with delivery Nov. 30.
Supporting the general fund fundraisers helps with the tuition costs of educating a student at UCA.
On Saturday, Sept. 24, UCA will host the fourth annual Rootin-Tootin-Shootin-Fest and Chili Cook-off. This event, held in Derby allows shooters to spend a fun-filled day shooting sporting clays and enjoying the company of fellow sportsmen. Tickets for the event cost $45 ( $35 with sponsors) and entitle the shooter to shoot 25 clays. In addition the registration entitles the shooter to a hot dog and beverage and a bowl of chili. Successful shooters also have the opportunity of winning an over and under 12-gage Mossburg Maverick. (Clays and 12-gage ammunition are provided as a part of the registration fee.) For more information, or to register for the event call United Christian Academy at 802-334-3112 or Ron at 802-895-4431. (Minors must have completed a hunter safety course and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to participate.)
Remember to continue collecting the box tops for education coupons found on many household items and groceries. Turn them in with your child's initials and grade on the back of each one to earn money for the school and your child will have a chance to win a prize. The first deadline to turn in box tops is Sept. 29. Also remember to register your Price Chopper AdvantEdge Card either online or at the customer service desk in store to earn points in the Tools for Schools program. It is quick and simple to register and is of no cost to you. Simply sign up and choose UCA using the code 18660. Each year UCA is able to purchase valuable school supplies thanks to the points earned. Be sure to ask family and friends to register their cards for UCA as well.
