Voting Day Held At Brighton Elementary School

Brighton Elementary School students use voting booths installed by Ray Fontaine.

ISLAND POND -- With the help of friends at the Brighton Town Clerk's office and a few dedicated town workers, students at Brighton Elementary School were able to have the whole student body participate in a real "mock" Election Day with "sample" official Vermont General Election ballots.

The students got a taste of the workings on the official November Voting Day. As part of their Social Studies class, the eighth graders and their teacher Tyler Willis organized the event and even went into various classrooms beforehand instructing the younger students on what to expect on their first experience of "Election Day."

The results of the students' election are: President, Barack Obama, 73 votes; U.S. Senator, Bernie Sanders, 38 votes; Representative to Congress, Peter Welch, 34 votes; Vermont Governor: Peter Shumlin, 33 votes; Lt. Governor, Phil Scott, 29 votes; State Treasurer, Beth Pearce, 24 votes; Secretary of State, James Condos, 30 votes; Auditor of Accounts, Vince Illuzzi, 17; Attorney General, William Sorrell, 16.
