Chief Justice a mistake?

To the Editor:

Referring to his appointment of the Chief Justice of the United States, a former President is quoted as saying: "Biggest damfool mistake I ever made."

That was President Eisenhower quoted by William B. Ewald, Jr., research assistant for Eisenhower's memoirs, in Eisenhower the President, p. 95, and referred to Chief Justice Earl Warren.

Time will eventually tell whether George W. Bush will make the same comment about his appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts. I'm not judging; just wondering.
