Libertarianism is for everyone
To the Editor:
I'm writing regarding your editorial of Monday, April 8, entitled "Stranger than Fiction," which takes issue with the request of a Massachusetts convict to have the state pay for a sex change operation.
As a fiscal conservative, I'm sympathetic to this. However, the mocking and brutal attitude that you display towards people who don't fit your sexual preconceptions is frankly appalling.
Your editorial ends with this sentence: "The way we'd do it would take thirty seconds and cost only as much as a hatchet and band aid." If this was meant to be funny, let me assure you that it is not. If it was written seriously, your editor needs some lessons in civil rights and the limits of free speech. You have the right to think that transsexuals are weird. You do not have the right to publicly advocate assault against them.
The Caledonian-Record seems to pride itself on being a bastion of libertarianism. A true libertarian defends the right of all citizens to live their lives as they see fit, as long as they are not infringing on the rights of others. Bogus libertarians are all about freedom until they encounter someone who confuses and frightens them, at which point their true colors emerge. Your editorial plants you firmly in the second category. While it nominally concerns the question of state funding for sex change surgery, your hatred of transsexuals comes through loud and clear.
Transsexuals face unremitting discrimination, violence, and even murder on a daily basis from a society that is terrified of them. The Caledonian has added to this onslaught with this revolting editorial. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
