Please be alert and slow down

To the Editor:

It was so sad to hear of the tragic accident that occuried on March 30th South Woodstock. While riding alongside the roadway, two riders on horseback were hit by a pick-up truck. Both riders and horses were injured, One horse had to be put down because of the severity of its injuries. My heart goes out to all those involved in this terrible event.

I hope that we all will use extreme caution when passing a horse and rider. Please take the small amount of time to slow down when approaching, and give them a bit more room when safely possible. Horses can become nervous and spook when scared, and that can result in upredictable reactions. For the safety and enjoyment of everyone, please be courteous to all who share our roadways. Stay alert and slow down.

Drive by as if it is someone you love going down the side of the road. Thank you.

Driver and equestrian,
