Seriously flawed editorial

To the Editor:

When did The Caledonian-Record become the Union Leader of Vermont??!! The only thing that was seriously erred in your July 18 Editorial Comment was everything you wrote. Shouldn't the Editor of the North Country's leading paper fact check what he writes before he blows smoke in his readers' faces?? You cited four different bills where you lay claim President Obama "is willfully ignoring". To second the record straight, President Obama signed The Water Resources Reform and Development Act into law on June 10, 2014. He signed The Farm Bill into law on February 7, 2014. He signed the Home Heating Emergency Assistance bill into law on March 21, 2014. He signed the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act into law on March 21, 2014. So your distaste for President Obama is so great that you're will to lie in your Editorial Comments in an attempt to make your point??!! just who is the "unusually smooth liar"?

As to your issue with President Obama's statement "so far this year, Republicans in Congress have blocked every serious idea to strengthen the middle class", sorry but the sentence is fairly spot on. First off, the fact stands that few bills have passed Congress in 2014. Secondly, Republicans blocked raising the minimum wage, blocked the fair pay act and blocked student loan reform. Was his use of "every serious idea" somewhat flawed? Yes. Was the general gist of the statement true? Yes! Just take the Republican stance on raising the minimum wage. Time and again, Republicans try to lay claim that raising the minimum wage would adversely affect African Americans and Hispanic teenage workers through 1000's of job layoffs of minimum wage workers. WRONG! Most Republicans are so out of touch with reality they don't even know who the minimum wage earners are in the US. 78% of minimum wage earners are white and the average age of those making minimum wage are 35. I stand firmly with columnist Jason Easley who wrote on April 30, 2014, "Republicans are actively working to eliminate the middle class, because they want an oligarchic society of haves and have nots".

And the "Pinocchio test"? Shouldn't the editor of The Caledonian Record use something other than a test named after a wooden puppet to prove his point?? But, since he seems to put his full weight in the test, let's list some of the Republicans who fail the test: Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, Matt Drudge, Rush Limbaugh, Michele Bachman, Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, or should I say "wooden nose"??

And to continue his erroneous claims, the editor writes "we're convinced that President Obama will be judged as one of the worst in our nation's history". First off, who to hell are "we're"?? All the workers at The Caledonian Record? The people of St. Johnsbury? Everyone in the NEK? You and your typewriter? If you're going to lay the claim than don't hide your opinion with a lackluster "we're". Secondly, maybe you read the Quinnipiac College survey results released in June 2014 rating President Obama as the worst. If so, that is a seriously flawed study that will always disfavor the incumbent. You may remember that George Bush No. 2 is on record as receiving the highest rating of 34% on the Quinnipiac worst scale during his term in office. Thirdly, I suggest you pick up a copy of US News and World Report and read their July 13, 2010 pick of the 10 worst Presidents in US history. Guess what, President Obama isn't on the list! Please don't respond and tell me your editorial estimation of where the president will stand in history is more sacred than that of the venerable US News and World Report!

What the editor should be opining about is what a disastrous mess all our politicians have made for us. The blame lies everywhere...Democrats, Republicans, Independents, the president, the Speaker of the House, the Tea Party and on and on and on. Name one politician that has not been caught in a lie, has not overstated the facts or has not manipulated the numbers to make it work for him or herself. You can't. It's unfortunate that readers and listeners are bombarded with such editorial and news garbage (e.g. your "Serious Factual Errors" piece) that it's a monumental task to find the real truth.
