Today, the maroon-clad Lyndon Institute football team will do battle with the green and white St. Johnsbury Academy Hilltoppers in a football game that goes back over a century and which is arguably the most important matchup of the season for both teams. Both schools have been running rituals and celebrations all through the past week, churning up enthusiasm for THE BIG GAME, and several thousand fans from both towns will be there at Lyndon's Lewis Field to roar their approval or shed buckets of tears, depending on the outcome.

We'll be there, because we love it, and because it has been a part of growing up in this part of the Kingdom all of our lives. Everybody knows that SJA has won more times than L.I., but if you crow about that to a Lyndon fan, he/she will throw the Academy's longest losing streak to the Institute, 12 years, from 1920 through 1932, in your face. We have always been amused by SJA's always calling the weekend of the game, the L.I. weekend, while L.I. calls it the Academy weekend.

So while the North Country Falcons have the best chance at a state title this season, already with a 2011 Barrel Bowl title under its belt, we'll be watching enthusiastically as the Vikes and 'Toppers clash on Saturday.
