On the girls side, Vincent and Bornstein will lead a deep girls team with Olmstead, Mulcahy, and Barter looking to score consistently.

Outlook: On the boys side, "everything starts with Dage and Brandon," Langmaid said, adding he needs "those guys who ran well in JV ... to step it up. I think they're capable." Langmaid said it will be important for at least two Hilltoppers to "be in sight of Dage and Brandon." On the girls side, Langmaid hopes to give two-time defending state champion Champlain Valley Union something to think about. "We're pushing it very hard," he said. "We have zero seniors. If we don't get them this year, we've got next year. We're somewhat young, but we're experienced."

Outlook: "Elise is a good leader for the Rangers," Hennemuth said. "She's really into it. She'll lead our team with spirit and experience." The Rangers will not be able to field a boys team this season and the girls, while formidable, will need to stay healthy to field a competitive team in D-II. "This thing could all fall apart," Hennemuth said. "We need to have more runners like (graduated senior) Canaan McKenzie -- a senior who was so busy... but he still had his mind on cross country. He nearly pulled off his best time at state last year. We have a legacy. I'd like to convey that to our young runners: 'This is what it can be'."
