The possible re-location of the state office building on Route 5 to an empty lot on Main Street has been dropped from the town’s application to become a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district.

The TIF program uses incremental increases in property taxes to pay for public infrastructure improvements – such as utilities, roads or sidewalks – around private development projects. But TIF projects must be approved by the town and bonds to pay for these infrastructure projects must be approved by St. Johnsbury voters.
