A longtime Oxbow Union High School coach pleaded not guilty in Orange Superior Court in Chelsea to repeatedly having sex with a student during the late 1990s.
Brian Musty, 43, Topsham, was charged with sexually assaulting a student more than 100 times, beginning in 1997 when the student was 15 years old and attending Oxbow Union High School where Musty was a coach and teacher. The alleged assaults took place at the school and at Musty's home.
If convicted, Musty could face a life sentence.
Musty was arrested on Nov. 5 at the school by Orange County Sheriff Deputy Jocelyn Stohl following a meeting with police, Musty and Oxbow Principal Larry Walsh.
The investigation began on Oct. 10, when the Orange County Special Investigations Unit received a report of a sexual assault from a woman, now 30 years of age, who told police about the sexual assaults by Musty. Referring to the assaults when she was a student, the alleged victim told police she was having a difficult time accepting her past and was seeing a counselor. In an attempt to deal with the pain, she confided in her counselor and decided to report the abuse.
Judge Timothy Tomasi set bail at $20,000 during Musty's arraignment and set conditions of release. Musty's next scheduled court appearance is on April 24th at 10 a.m. in Orange Superior Court in Chelsea when the Court will hold a status conference in the criminal case.
