NEWARK - The town is in the fight of its life. A majority of the residents of this small, northern-most Caledonia County community seem unified in not wanting to host an industrial wind development.
A vote of the town at a special meeting in September to approve an amended Newark Town Plan to explicitly state that the town would not welcome a wind development saw an overwhelming turnout. The vote was about 3-1 in favor of the changes, and also implemented height restrictions. There are some in Newark who support the efforts of the project - called Seneca Mountain Wind, LLC, a joint or co-development envisioned by Eolian Renewable Energy, LLC of Portsmouth, NH and Nordex USA of Chicago, a turbine manufacturer - but they are in the minority.
