A local man is one of five people indicted by a federal grand jury on suspicions he was involved in a drug ring dealing heroin and cocaine.
A news release Wednesday from the U.S. Attorney & #039;s Office in Burlington named the local suspect as Colin Russell, 23, St. Johnsbury.
Little information was available early this morning about the status of Russell & #039;s case. The news release dealt mostly with Wednesday & #039;s arraignment of a suspected leader of the ring.
That suspect is Edwin Laboy, also known as Edwin Deo, 26, Springfield, Mass.
Laboy pleaded innocent to drug conspiracy charges. Federal Magistrate Jerome J. Niedermeier ordered Laboy jailed pending trial. Laboy faces a mandatory sentence of at least five years, and he could get up to 40 years in prison, if convicted.
Besides Laboy and Russell, the other suspects named in the indictment are Jessica Taylor, 21, Burlington; Jamal Richards, 24, Burlington; and Frederick Smith, 24, Springfield, Mass.
As part of this federal case, authorities are seeking forfeiture of some assets of the alleged drug ring, including cash, a Lexus sedan and an Acura.
