In the final days and hours of the 2012 legislative session, our lawmakers continued to waste time on meaningless resolutions. This time the resolution was to ban "fracking" to produce natural gas. Fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, is pumping fluid into deep well to release natural gas in commercial quantities from rock strata deep in the earth. In case anybody doesn't know, fracking is the most recent bête noir for radical environmentalists, the newest replacement for their last completely discredited bête noir, global warming a.k.a. climate change.

All of the palaver about anti-fracking in Vermont is totally meaningless in the context of the national dialogue. Vermont has no natural gas that isn't shipped here in tanker trucks and no chance of finding any by fracking or any other method. Banning it is tantamount to banning alien visits, but our wild-eyed ideologues are strutting about for having made Vermont the "first in the nation."
