To the Editor:

The DCF (the dept of children and families) here in Vt is again under scrutiny and in court on a lawsuit for “Unlawful Family separation.” The complaint is about a case where a child was separated from the parent and although DCF states that all the proper procedures and legal processes were followed, lawyers for the parent say otherwise. Larry Crist, a former State of Vt staff at social services, is also involved and he says that child Protective Services needs to be monotored and evaluated for costs to operate! By whom does he think should do this?

These kinds of complaints are frequent at DCF and as a former SRS social worker for 20 years I was aware of them. Often times a child being removed from an abusive family is placed in foster care. These cases have to be proven in Family Court and are usually contested for parents. Crist’s statement that DCF treats most families as the enemy is not true and grossly exagerated. This sounds like a political spin to me.
