Is it fair?

To the Editor:

I just read the article from Thursday's newspaper about Lucy Leriche's speeding ticket. I am very confused. It is my understanding (from anyone who has gone to court in Vermont recently to fight a speeding ticket) that the traffic fine amount can be reduced by the traffic court judge, but that the judge is never allowed to eliminate the points going onto someone's driver's license.

Not only is she getting an opportunity to possibly have the points eliminated, but she is having a jury trial, and is picking the jury members to participate in her trial. While I certainly feel compassion for her situation as a fiscally responsible Mom and a driver in a hurry to get somewhere NOW, it all seems strange and very unfair to me.

Is she really getting different treatment than other speeders?
