To the Editor:

I have just come in from doing some early Christmas shopping on Railroad Street. I was so happy to see all the stores beautifully decorated and most of the new parking lot filled. I was also delighted to find things for most of the people on my list. The merchants are doing a great job providing merchandise that is really appealing.

This would have been a perfect shopping trip if it weren & #039;t for the appalling conditions outside the stores. The sidewalks are littered with leaves and debris from the burned-out buildings. It just looks as if the town doesn & #039;t care. The merchants that are still in business are making a great effort and the Academy students have done a great job of decorating the windows and protective walls on some of the spaces.

Why does the town allow a few landowners to ruin the efforts of all the others? If our town fathers can & #039;t force these people to clean up their own spaces, the least they could do is send a crew to clean things up.

I really enjoy shopping locally but I would like to be able to do so in a pleasant environment.
