The Boy Scouts will survive
To the Editor:
Just finished reading a column by Doug Patton in the Caledonian. I was glad to discover that he is not a member of the Caledonian's staff. A little investigation found Patton is a member of the Limbaugh-Beck school of thought. Like many of his far right contemporaries his writing seems to be based more on wild accusations and less on facts. He goes on about how the Boy Scouts possible move to allow all boys to join will bring about the end of society as we know it. He writes about the "purity" of scouting over the past 100 years.
In the 1950s, I too was a Boy Scout in two different troops. We had gay scouts in our troops. We just didn't know it. One of the best adult Scout leaders I ever had was gay -- a fact we never knew until many years later when he was out of scouting and admitting it was acceptable. So gays have been in scouting since its inception. Scouting survived having gay members for over 100 years. I am sure it will be just as effective finally admitting their presence.
It seems there is always a minority group that some people deem to be inferior or dangerous. The list of those groups singled out to be persecuted include Native Americans, African Americans, Chinese, Jews, Irish and Catholics. I suppose it's the gays turn now.
