It was hard to escape the grotesque pictures of tortured Iraqi prisoners recently as they graced the cover of most major newspapers and with greater graphic detail on the Web. As Donald Rumsfeld would say, \Not a pretty picture.\
More alarming, however, is the fact that according to non-governmental organizations based in Iraq, torture, abuse and humiliation of prisoners is widespread in U.S.-run detention centers and not just limited to a couple cases.
This past Sunday (May 9) a spokeswoman for the Iraqi Human Rights Organization (IHRO) told a news conference in Baghdad, \We are here to tell the world that the cases of torture of Iraqi prisoners are not isolated incidents and they are not limited to Abu Ghraib prison, nor to the six U.S. MPs.\ She continued, \These are part of a systematic method of torture and inhuman treatment.\
Now besides invading Iraq to dispose of the feared weapons of mass destruction (which have still yet to be found), the coalition justified military action based on the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein\'s horribly oppressive regime. A year after war\'s end apparently regime change has done little to curb torturous conditions in prisons, and what makes matters even worse is these crimes are being committed by the supposed \liberating\ forces.
This war was never about humanitarian issues, and just how far is this current U.S. administration willing to push to gain a reliable source of oil?
