The GOP And Sen. Jeffords

The Vermont Republican Party is being offered a lot of advice these day. And certainly the Green Mountain GOP can use some good ideas after failing to produce credible candidates for the United States Senate and House this year.

But we don't think the state party needs one idea advanced in certain quarters.

Republicans are being told they should pay more attention to Vermont's "moderate Republican" Sen. James Jeffords.

Give us a break.

We're sure Jeffords could do a good job of energizing the moderate section of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. But if party labels still mean anything at all in the twilight of our century, the senator isn't really a Republican.

And there's very little Jeffords can do for the Republican Party except to turn it into a group of warmed-over Democrats.
