We've sadly reported some examples of thievery in recent years. But the theft over the holiday weekend of the large American flag in Lunenburg was a truly disgusting and senseless act.

But it didn't just happen in Lunenburg. We were told of a small American flag owned by an area resident, which was stolen from that person's lawn. And we've heard about some folks responding to the public playing of the national anthem with a spirit of indifference if not downright annoyance.

Our nation, of course, is envied by people living under tyranny in foreign lands. We wish certain people in our own region would start showing some respect for America's birthday.
