A St. Johnsbury Academy student group is leading a campaign to thank Vermont veterans for their service on Veterans Day. Expanding a project they started last year, members of the Academy National Honor Society (NHS) chapter's National Committee are collecting writings from the school's students which will be delivered to patients at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction and veteran's homes throughout Vermont.

"Last year, a small group of students wrote letters, cards, poems, etc. to some of the veterans in the Veterans Hospital," Karen Pontti, one of the NHS chapter's faculty advisors, said. "I received several notes of thanks from veterans themselves, but received a special note of thanks from the VA Hospital. In the card of appreciation from the hospital, the director of correspondence indicated that the veterans receive very little on Veterans Day and the notes from our school were very much cherished."

Members of the public interested in joining the effort are invited to mail their writings to: Karen Pontti, St. Johnsbury Academy, P.O. Box 906, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. Submissions can also be dropped off at the Academy's front desk, located at the Main Street entrance to Colby Hall.

NHS members will bundle and mail the submissions to the VA hospital and Veterans Homes Wednesday, Nov. 7. Additional information about the project is available by contacting Pontti through email at kpontti@stjacademy.org.
