The Student Government of St. Johnsbury Academy will hold a "Stuff a Bus" challenge to gather donations of non-perishable food items, beginning this week, Oct. 14-18; the week leading up to the 109th SJA-LI varsity football game. The food will be donated to St. Johnsbury's Kingdom Community Food Shelf to help families in need.
The inter-school Stuff a Bus challenge started in 2005 under the leadership of Academy Student Government President Courtney Kozlowski, Class of 2006. "It was a nice way to give back to a good cause for the community," said Kozlowski, who now works in the Academy's Admission Office.
"Once again our students live out our belief that we are at our best when we love those the most who need it the most," said Academy Headmaster Tom Lovett. The Academy's Stuff a Bus food drive will include the participation of the Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes.
The amount of food and monetary support raised in the Academy's drive will be reported at halftime of the historic rivalry game (called "The Game" because of its long history), which was a finalist in the national USA Today high-school football rivalry contest last year that saw both SJA and LI supporters actively engage in shared community support.
"The efforts of our student body, faculty, and staff never cease to amaze me," said Beth Choiniere, Academy assistant headmaster for Campus Life. "Their efforts here to rally the community in this are not only telling of who they aspire to be, but also give hope to what it means to be civically responsible. I applaud their initiative."
The Game this year will be played at Lyndon Institute at 1 p.m. on Oct. 19. "This fundraiser is a competition to see which classes (at the Academy) can raise the most to fight hunger," said Academy Student Government president and senior Laurence Leblanc.
Academy students will hold class celebrations throughout the week, leading up to The Game. The school's Pep Rally Parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, on campus and along Main Street in St. Johnsbury. Other activities are planned for the week of The Game.
