She attended The University of Vermont, where she received her nursing degree. She returned to Simmons College in 2000, where she received her degree as a pediatric nurse practitioner.

Stewart's interest in the health care field developed while taking a course at St. Johnsbury Academy as a nurse's aide. The nurse who taught the course, Shari Ross, is currently a nurse in Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital's birth center.

Stewart has most recently worked at Weeks Medical Center, where she worked with Dr. Elaine Stasny, currently a pediatrician at St. Johnsbury Pediatrics. Stewart has worked as a pediatric office nurse, a mentor for care coordinators, a case manager for children with chronic illnesses, and an ICU nurse. She has been a nurse practitioner for the past 11 years and had worked at St. Johnsbury Pediatrics on a per diem basis four years ago.

"Brenda is a great asset to our practice, and we feel extremely fortunate to have her," said Cheryl Stahler, Practice Manager at St. Johnsbury Pediatrics.

Said Stewart, "It's a busy practice and everyone gets along very well. I enjoy promoting health and guiding parents and children in making healthy choices, but, I'm also here for every type of health issue."

Linda Ward, who has been at St. Johnsbury Pediatrics for the past 14 years, has taken on the role of Care Coordinator. In 2011, St. Johnsbury Pediatrics was awarded recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance Patient Centered Medical Home Program and is one of the first pediatric practices in Vermont to become part of the Vermont Blueprint for Health. The Patient Centered Medical Home Standards emphasize the use of systematic, patient-centered, coordinated care that supports access, communication and patient involvement.

Ward's role as Care Coordinator provides assistance to patients and parents, including referrals to specialists and other care providers, as well as facilitating communication between the primary care provider, patients, parents, the Community Health Team and other service providers, including schools and mental health facilities.

According to Ward, "I love my position; it's very rewarding. I feel like I can make a real difference in people's lives, and they are so grateful. I'm fortunate to be working with great people and community organizations outside of our office as well, like Community Connections."

St. Johnsbury Pediatrics Practice Manager Cheryl Stahler said of Ward's new role, "Linda knows the families really well, so it's been virtually a seamless transition. She loves to help, is super organized and is good at following through. She's great in this role, and it's beneficial for our patients and the providers."
