Cody's Car Talk: The 2012 Audi S5

2012 Audi S5

To finish the 2012 year, we need to do a 2012 car. But, not just any car, one of my favorite cars from Germany and whose racing team I favor during the annual Le Mans race. Have you guessed the car yet? It's the 2012 Audi S5.

Why not do a story on the 2013 Audi S5? Well, being a gear head, I was shocked and disappointed that the 2013 model does not have a V8 engine. A twin-turbo charged V6 somehow is more politically correct, considering fuel consumption and today's desire to be more 'green' and eco-friendly. That's all fine and dandy, but somehow just knowing that there's a V6 under the hood dampens my interest in the latest Audi.

Back to the 2012 Audi S5, what is my favorite thing about it? It's just so cool. The styling, the engine, the all-wheel drive, it just breaths brimstone and fire, all with an elegance that could only come from the Germans, could only come from Audi. The first time I encountered an Audi S5 was in a video game, "Driver: San Francisco." Now, I knew about Audi's before, as their racing team is my all time favorite to root for during Le Mans. But the S5, at least the game version, simply annihilated the competition. And not just once either, but consistently it performed like an Audi should. From that moment onward, I made an effort to purchase an Audi S5 in every video game I play, if it's available.

Now the facts: The Audi S5 is the high performance variant of Audi's A5. It is also the coupe, cabriolet and five-door fastback versions of the fourth generation B8 Audi S4 saloon and estate models. Like all Audi "S" cars, they are only available as standard with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. Most versions of the S5 are manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany. It is considered a compact executive sports car intended to compete with Mercedes and BMW's with comparable features.

The Audi S5 is what I would consider a modern day muscle car. It's moderately priced, ranging from $37K to $54K depending on what features you choose and, more importantly, it is one of the very few cars I like in the color black. The way it sounds, aggressive yet refined ... The way it looks, powerful yet svelte ... The Audi S5, to me, is the way a modern sports car is supposed to be.
