Educators, children, parents, and community members from all across America were given the opportunity to win $10,000 by answering one simple question: "What would your school do with $10,000 to improve youth fitness?"
Henkel, the company behind some of the nation's leading brands, including Dial®, Purex®, Renuzit®, Right Guard®, Soft Scrub®, and Loctite® posed that question to elementary, middle and high schools nationwide when it launched its 2011 Henkel Helps Get Kids Fit contest www.HenkelHelps.com in July, offering one school at each level a chance to win their share of $30,000 to improve youth fitness.
On Nov. 1, North Country Union High School was selected as one of five semifinalists, from nearly 2,000 schools nationwide that submitted, competing in the high school division to win $10,000 to improve youth fitness at their school, but they need the support and votes of the community in order to win.
The Henkel Helps Get Kids Fit program was launched at the end of summer break as a back-to-school activity for elementary, middle and high schools to combat childhood obesity and help bolster shrinking school physical education budgets. North Country Union High School answered the contest question by saying if they're awarded the $10,000 they would purchase handheld GPS devices for students. Even with a strong commitment to youth health, offering a variety of classes in health and fitness, NCUHS feels that they can, and need, to do more to attract members of Gen Y to stay engaged in physical activity. With the use of GPS devices, students will be able to use cutting edge technology to navigate the surrounding lands while engaging in outdoor physical exercise including scavenger hunts and hikes. In addition, they'd like to create an ultimate Frisbee course that students can use as it will offer a new space outdoors that students can be active on.
