Every year the fifth graders at Newport City Elementary School choose a service project instead of exchanging gifts at Christmas time. For the past few years the students have supported the Veteran's Memorial Wreath Campaign.
This year the students worked harder than ever and raised more money than ever! With a bake sale, hat day and contributions from students, families, faculty and community members, they raised $800.
Homeroom classes challenged each other to see who could raise the most money with a goal of $500 for all classes combined. The teachers offered a pizza party if they reached their goal, so students will be enjoying pizza for lunch.
The students worked hard to raise the money to support putting wreaths on veterans graves. Many students had a relative who served the country and they wanted to show respect for those who have died. On Dec. 6, students and families met at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport to distribute the wreaths.
