Attorney Mary K. Parent has been elected president of the St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce. Parent, an attorney with the firm Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, began her one-year term in December. She succeeds Jeff Moore, owner of Quest Transportation, who was recently voted into the office of town selectman.

Parent is a senior associate at DRM working in both the firm's St. Johnsbury and Lebanon, N.H. offices. She represents business clients in corporate and commercial transactions, business formation and operation, private equity transactions, commercial real estate transactions, commercial financing and mergers and acquisitions in both states. As well, she has worked with local, regional and national private equity firms and technology companies in investment transactions, including stock and convertible debt transactions. She regularly helps clients to form Vermont and New Hampshire corporations and limited liability companies. She has formed non-profit entities and assisted clients in completing the necessary paperwork to obtain 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service.

The St. Johnsbury Chamber serves as both the local chamber of commerce and the Designated Downtown organization through the National Main Street Program. Through a variety of initiatives, the chamber is tackling the economic restructuring of St. Johnsbury through design, business recruitment, market analysis, and marketing. The chamber was a driving force behind the reconstruction of the 1879 Building, damaged by a fire on Dec. 23 of last year. Parent's responsibilities include chairing the board meetings, appointing committee chairs, serving as an ex officio member of all committees, monitoring finances, supervising and evaluating the executive director, setting goals for the organization and evaluating whether the organization is meeting its mission.

Lyndon State College President Joe Bertolino announced that Dr. Kellie Bean has been named provost/dean of academic affairs at LSC. Bean takes the helm from interim dean Dr. Alison Lathrop. Lathrop stepped in when Dr. Donna Dalton announced her retirement during the fall 2012 semester. The position was restructured from dean of academic affairs to provost/dean of academic affairs to reflect the changing nature of higher education. Bean's appointment is slated to begin July 1, 2013.

Bean has spent 25 years in higher education--19 of them at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., where she is the current associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and a professor of English. Like LSC, Marshall's student population has a sizable percentage of first-in-family, modest income students. Bean has an "acute understanding of the challenges, both actual and (often) perceived" that these students face. She sees "student centeredness" as the key to her success as an educator and administrator--and to her college's strong retention rate.

Bean was instrumental in bringing a forensics degree program to Marshall, where they now have a full-time coach and forensics professor. She is a founding member of the Marshall University New Works Festival, now in its third year, for which she acts as playwright and director. She has authored the book "Post-Backlash Feminism: Women and the Media since Reagan/Bush" and the forthcoming "Harold Pinter: A Literary Companion." Bean served as reviewer for both "Race/Ethnicity: Multidisciplinary Global Context" and "Feminist Media Studies." She is a founding board member for The Lunar Stratagem, an international theater company, based in Huntington.

President Bertolino said, "I am delighted that Dr. Bean has accepted our invitation to join the LSC family. Her experience as an administrator, full professor, and scholar brings a new and fresh perspective to the college. Kellie's scholarship, particularly in the areas of social justice and feminism, are noteworthy and refreshing. I was particularly impressed with Dr. Bean's hands-on experience in retention and completion efforts. Her work in this regard is quite strong and will serve LSC well. Kellie's style is authentic. She is direct, humorous and real. She will be an asset to LSC and I welcome her to our community."

Bean is originally from the Midwest, with a stint in Delaware as a doctoral student. Community involvement has been a hallmark of her career and she acknowledges LSC's commitment to community engagement. She said she is also looking forward to working at a smaller school like LSC with its "more holistic approach" to education.

Dr. Kellie Bean will assume the position of provost/dean of academic affairs at Lyndon State College on July 1.
