NEWPORT -- United Christian Academy is planning it's annual Community Service day for Oct. 28. Students plan to do leaf raking in the community and extensive clean up at Prouty Beach and Gardner Park which are remaining open longer this year than in years past because of flooding in the spring and during the hurricane.
PSATs will be taking place at United Christian Academy, Wednesday, Oct. 12. UCA will be administering the PSATs for the school's students and for a limited number of home-schooled students in grades 10 and 11. Testing will be held at the Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Derby. For members of the junior class (2013) the PSAT is the primary means in which national academic merit scholarships are offered. Colleges also look at scores on the PSAT to determine scholarship allocations for entering students in the fall of 2014. Juniors therefore are encouraged to take this test. Sophomores should consider taking the test as a practice for their junior year.
The next meeting Parent Association Meeting takes place Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium. The school is also collecting box tops. Students who bring in over 100 box tops receive a prize.
The third annual UCA Home Party takes place Thursday, Nov. 3 from 6-8 p.m.
UCA raised approximately $3500 during the Barton Fair fundraiser this summer, which will go a long way to support the school. The Benefit Dinner, held at the United Church of Derby, had many volunteers and contributors make this fundraiser a success, profiting over $1,000.
Students having the top sales in the Yankee Candle and Pampered Chef fundraisers are: Yankee Candle, Jack Lippmann; and Pampered Chef, Sam Borsari.
The School Store gift certificates are now available. A sheet of 10 $1 gift certificates can be purchased in the front office for $10 upon request. The students love to make purchases at the store. This would be a great way to treat, reward or bless someone in a way that will also help support the sports program. Selected styles of sweatshirts (that cannot be worn to school except during dress down days) will be sold for $7 each while supplies last.
The UCA students are preparing to start selling for the school's annual Christmas wreath fundraiser, which is vital to the success of the school. The orders are due back to Emily Wheeler no later than Oct. 26. The wreaths will be delivered Nov. 30. Volunteers are needed on the 30th to help sort the wreaths.
