The Lyndon State College Upward Bound program will host an informational meeting Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. in Alexander Twilight Theater at LSC for all high school students who are interested in applying to the program. Upward Bound is one of the federally funded TRiO programs through the U.S. Department of Education that is committed to providing modest-income first generation college bound students the academic background, college preparatory experiences and support needed to succeed in college immediately after high school.
The program works with 70 area high school students from the Northeast Kingdom who are required to meet one of the two following criteria: they will be the first in their family to obtain a four-year college degree, or they are from modest income family. Two thirds of Upward Bound students must meet both of these requirements. Upward Bound works with 75 students from nine participating high schools in the Northeast Kingdom and Northern New Hampshire including: Canaan Memorial, Lake Region Union, Concord, Lyndon Institute, Craftsbury Academy, Danville, Woodsville, St. Johnsbury Academy and Rivendell Academy.
Students spend six weeks of their summer on the campus of Lyndon State College where they take college preparatory courses including SAT Prep, hold volunteer work study positions in the local community to explore possible careers, and participate in fun activities on campus while living in the dorms. Upward Bound also provides academic guidance and support to students throughout the school year. While in the program students will have the opportunity to participate in community service activities, attend leadership events, college tours, and financial aid workshops. Upward Bound is a federally funded educational opportunity program, and is free for any eligible participating student.
All students interested in applying to Upward Bound are strongly encouraged to attend. The meeting will involve all current students and will outline upcoming events and plans for the summer of 2013 as well as program requirements.
