The Waumbek Dollars for Scholars Committee recently announced this year's winners of the Jack Gordon Scholarship Awards. This year two $1,000 awards go to the following students: Littleton High School -- Joseph McDermott, and White Mountains Regional High School -- Mark Lufkin.
To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be continuing their education and have been active members of the golf teams at Profile, Littleton or White Mountains Regional high schools. The Waumbek Dollars for Scholars fund has awarded over $30,000 in college scholarships over the years to eligible students.
Seven years ago this scholarship was started in memory of long-term Waumbek Golf Club member Jack Gordon, who loved the game of golf and encouraged everyone, especially young people, to enjoy the sport. An active committee of Waumbek Golf Club members and friends sponsor an annual golf tournament to raise funds for the scholarships. Major support for the fund comes from the Friel family, owners of the Waumbek Golf Club, the Joe Rivers Foundation, and F.B. Spaulding Co., as well as other local businesses and, of course, the golfers and volunteers who make the tournament possible.
This year's tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sept. 23 at the Waumbek Golf Club in Jefferson, N.H. Call the Waumbek Golf Club at 586-7777 to register your team. It will be a best ball scramble for four-person teams and the registration fee (which will include cart, prizes and luncheon) will be $55 per person.
