0.47% K-8 reduction

To the Editor:

On Monday night the Saint Johnsbury School Board presented a budget that represents a 0.47% reduction in K-8 costs. All of the increase over last year's budget results from high school tuition spending and the bulk of that increase is due to growth in the high school student population. The number of K-8 students has also increased, and the school will meet those additional needs ably under the reduced K-8 budget that has been proposed. That said, I do not believe that a budget reduced to a greater extent than the one currently proposed will meet the needs of our students. Also, I hope that all parties, including taxpayers, will work to reduce future class sizes should the K-8 population continue to increase. I ask voters to support this budget, the students who receive services because of it, and the Saint Johnsbury families who currently rely on our school.
