Vt. H.S. track and field: Defending champ Lia Rotti leads after Day 1

BURLINGTON — St. Johnsbury star Lia Rotti opened a big lead in her chase for back-to-back crowns while Essex sophomore Wyatt Lamell has the slight advantage atop the boys leaderboard following Day 1 of the 44th Vermont high school decathlon state championships at the University of Vermont on Monday.

Rotti, headed to Tufts University in the fall, won the pole vault and javelin during a 2,674-point effort in the meet’s first five events. She holds a 319-point edge over Caroline Hill of Champlain Valley.
